WEEK 8: MASS WASTING

Belgium is considered at low risk for mass wasting events like landslides, mudslides, and rockslides. It has not been a common occurrence in the past. However, climate change in the last few decades has impacted the severity of normal rainstorms causing major flooding. There have been mudslides and landslides recently in 2021 as a result of catastrophic floods that hit a large part of the Country.

In order to help Belgium’s citizens prepare for the likely possibility of more mass wasting events, the National Crisis Center of Belgium has created a special section on their website. It has impact and probability of occurrence, tips/suggestions for preparation and locations of emergency zones. The website also lays out the emergency plan and contact info for reference.

  1. Thanks for sharing! I really enjoyed reading your post and all of the research you put together. I had no idea that climate change had such a big impact on your country. My country, Paraguay isn't too big on mass wasting events either, mostly landslides from flooding. Its major issue is climate change as well! I thought it was pretty cool that our countries had that in common.
